Katarina Witt started to ice skate at the age 5 years. Then, her talent became apparent and she was accepted into Karl-Marx-Stadt's special school. Her coach Jutta was also at the school. Witt made her breakthrough season in 1982 when she came second in the World Championships held in Copenhagen. The elegance and grace of Witt caught the eye of everyone and she has been a dominant figure skater ever since. Olympic triumph Katarina (now Witt) took home the women's Figure Skating gold medal at Sarajevo in the Sarajevo Winter Games. The winner of the competition was a more competitive competition four years later. Although she lost in the free-skating competition, the gold medal was awarded to her performance on the compulsory figures and the short program. Witt became the first woman to take home a gold medal in both women's and men's figure-skating since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame After enjoying the success of an actress, Witt returned to the sport in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. She placed seventh but enchanted the crowd even though she didn't win the medal. The year 1995 was the year that Witt received her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
